Fear on the Morning Walk: 10-Year-Old Bronx Girl Targeted in Chain Robbery

A quiet Bronx neighborhood was shaken on Monday morning after a 10-year-old girl became the victim of a frightening robbery while walking to school. According to police, the child was followed for several blocks before the suspect made off with her gold chain in a sudden attack.

Early Morning Incident

The incident took place around 8:15 a.m. near East 169th Street, as the girl was headed toward her elementary school. Authorities say she noticed a man trailing her for some time but tried to ignore him. The suspect then reportedly approached her from behind, snatched the gold chain from her neck, and fled on foot toward Grand Concourse.

A Shocking Crime Against a Child

Witnesses described the suspect as a man in his late 20s or early 30s, wearing a black hoodie and dark jeans. One local resident, who saw the aftermath, said the girl appeared “shaken and in tears” as she quickly sought help from nearby pedestrians.

Police officials noted that the robbery was particularly disturbing because the victim is a child and the crime occurred on a busy morning when families were out en route to work and school.

Neighborhood Concerns

Local parents expressed outrage and fear over the incident, stating that they have grown increasingly concerned about safety for children walking to school. “It’s horrifying to think someone would target a little girl,” said a mother who lives nearby. “We always tell our kids to stick together, but this makes you realize even daylight isn’t enough protection.”

Police Response

NYPD officers responded swiftly, canvassing the area for witnesses and possible surveillance footage. While no arrests have yet been made, authorities are considering whether the suspect may be involved in other recent chain-snatching incidents reported in the Bronx over the past month.

Detectives have intensified patrols around school zones and are urging parents to accompany younger children whenever possible. They are also advising children to be alert, avoid walking alone for long distances, and report any suspicious behavior immediately.

School District Reaction

The school where the victim is enrolled has released a statement expressing concern and support for the student, confirming that counseling services are being provided. Staff have also warned students to stay in groups and avoid isolated paths.

Growing Worries in the Bronx

Chain-snatching crimes have been a recurring issue in certain Bronx neighborhoods, though targeting such a young child has amplified residents’ worry. Community leaders are calling for expanded policing and awareness campaigns to curb such crimes.

Parents and school officials plan to meet later this week to discuss additional safety measures. For now, heightened vigilance appears to be the community’s first line of defense against further incidents.
