PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Authorities in Beaverton are asking for the public’s help in locating two longtime friends who have been missing for nearly three weeks after setting out on what was believed to be an outdoor adventure.
According to the Beaverton Police Department, 67-year-old Eddie Hair and 68-year-old Scott Smith were last believed to be preparing for a trip that may have involved camping, hiking, or searching for rare rocks — activities the pair frequently enjoyed together.
“They often traveled to either the Oregon coast or central Oregon for such outings,” police said in a statement.

Missing Since Mid-September
Hair and Smith were reported missing on September 13 by a family friend after they failed to return as expected and could not be reached by phone. The two were last known to be traveling in a red 2005 Jeep Wrangler with Oregon license plate 494 QKW.
Authorities have not determined an exact destination, leaving the search area wide and challenging.
Investigators say there is no current evidence of foul play, but both men’s extended absence has become increasingly concerning to friends, family, and police.
“Their extended absence is unusual and concerning,” Beaverton police said. “We’re asking anyone who might have seen them or their vehicle in recent weeks to contact us immediately.”
Experienced Outdoorsmen
Friends describe the two men as experienced outdoors enthusiasts who often took spontaneous trips across Oregon to collect rocks, hike, or camp in remote areas. Both were said to be well-prepared for short outdoor excursions but not equipped for prolonged stays.
Family members fear that bad weather, a vehicle issue, or a medical emergency may have left them stranded in a remote area.
Public Asked to Help
Search efforts are ongoing, and local law enforcement agencies across Oregon have been alerted to look for the missing Jeep and its occupants. Authorities are also encouraging residents and travelers to check trailheads, forest service roads, and rural highways for any sign of the vehicle.
Anyone with information on the whereabouts of Eddie Hair or Scott Smith, or who may have spotted their red 2005 Jeep Wrangler (Oregon plate 494 QKW), is urged to contact the Beaverton Police Department immediately.
Officials continue to stress that while there is no indication of criminal activity, the men’s disappearance remains a priority investigation due to the length of time they have been missing.
As the search enters its third week, family members are holding out hope for answers — and the safe return of two friends who simply set out for another Oregon adventure and never came back.
