PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Portland police are investigating a fatal assault that occurred in downtown Portland on Sunday night, leaving one person dead.
Authorities said the incident began around 8 p.m. near Southwest 4th Avenue, where the victim was reportedly attacked under circumstances that remain unclear. Roughly an hour later, at about 9 p.m., officers were called to a hospital in Southwest Portland to assist with a medical emergency linked to the assault.
When police arrived, medical staff informed them that the victim had sustained serious injuries during the attack. Despite life-saving efforts, the victim was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital.

The Portland Police Bureau’s Homicide Unit has taken over the investigation. Detectives spent several hours Sunday night collecting evidence and speaking with witnesses in the downtown area. Authorities have not released the victim’s name pending notification of next of kin.
Police say the motive for the assault remains unknown, and no suspect description has been publicly disclosed. They are reviewing surveillance footage from nearby businesses and public cameras to piece together the events leading up to the attack.
