CANBY, Ore. – After years of dedication and hard work, the historic Mark Prairie Schoolhouse has received one of Oregon’s highest honors in historic preservation. The restored landmark is among nine projects statewide chosen to receive the 2025 DeMuro Award for Excellence in Historic Preservation, presented by Restore Oregon.
Historic Site Damaged by 2021 Ice Storm
The schoolhouse, first built in 1879, faced significant damage in 2021 when two massive oak trees toppled onto the structure during a devastating ice storm. Once a vibrant rural meeting hall, the building required extensive recovery efforts to stabilize and restore it to its former prominence.
Thanks to the commitment of local preservationists, community members, and restoration experts, the schoolhouse not only recovered but was revitalized into a cultural destination that now serves multiple purposes for the region.
A New Life for a Community Landmark
Today, the Mark Prairie Schoolhouse stands as more than a restored building. It functions as a community gathering space and a hub for cultural and educational programming. Visitors can explore exhibits highlighting:
-
Local history
-
Indigenous heritage
-
Oregon’s natural resources
The site also continues to serve its long-standing role as a meeting place for the Canby-area community, blending its historical significance with modern-day utility.
Recognized for Statewide Impact
The DeMuro Awards honor projects that demonstrate extraordinary craftsmanship, community impact, affordability, and sustainability. The Mark Prairie Schoolhouse restoration was singled out for successfully weaving together these values while preserving an essential piece of Oregon’s rural history.
Restore Oregon noted that the schoolhouse’s revival aligns with its mission to reflect Oregon’s diverse cultural heritage and foster the preservation of unique rural resources.
Celebration of Excellence
All nine award-winning projects will be formally recognized at the Restoration Celebration on October 24, 2025, from 4:30 to 7 p.m. at The Redd in Portland. The event will highlight the people and organizations behind these efforts while raising awareness of the importance of historic preservation.
Tickets for the celebration are available online at Restore Oregon’s event page.
Preserving Oregon’s Heritage
For the Canby community, the award is not only a recognition of architectural craftsmanship but also a validation of the schoolhouse’s role as a living piece of Oregon’s history. The restored structure now bridges the past and present, ensuring that the story of the 1879 Mark Prairie Schoolhouse continues to inspire future generations.
By overcoming disaster and transforming hardship into renewal, the project reflects the broader goals of preservation—protecting cultural heritage while fostering resilient and vibrant communities across Oregon.
