Man Arrested for Murdering His 71-Year-Old Father in Oregon City

A suspect was arrested in Portland Thursday for his role in the murder of a 71-year-old man in his Oregon City home the previous afternoon, later identified as the father of the alleged killer.

Mason David Estabrook, 29, of Portland, was taken into custody at around 7:40 p.m. in the 400 block of Northeast Davis Street after a 24-hour manhunt following the Oregon City Police Department’s discovery of the murder victim.

The Redheaded Blackbelt news blog, based in the Emerald Triangle of northern California, was the first to identify the victim as the suspect’s father, David Estabrook. The Current confirmed the identification with Oregon City Police.

“We are asking for people to be mindful of Mr. Estabrook’s family as they process and grieve during this tragedy,” Captain David Edwins said in an email.

Oregon City Police responded to the murder scene in the 900 block of Josephine Street at approximately 4:45 p.m. Mason Estabrook was announced as a suspect and the search began, with officials urging the public to consider him armed and dangerous.

He was described as a 6-foot, 3-inch white male with short blonde hair, last seen wearing blue jeans, black tennis shoes, and a red and black coat.

Estabrook was arrested by the Portland Police Bureau and lodged in the Clackamas County Jail on charges of second-degree murder, first-degree assault, first-degree burglary and unlawful use of a weapon.

“Oregon City Police detectives, along with members of the Clackamas County Major Crimes Team, are continuing their investigation,” the OCPD said in a Facebook post Thursday.

“We would like to thank the Portland Police Bureau, the Clackamas County Major Crimes Team, and the public for providing information leading to the quick apprehension of Mason Estabrook.”

According to the Redheaded Blackbelt blog, Dave Estabrook was a former business owner in Arcata, California, and was active in the famous Kinetic Sculpture Race the community hosts each year. Mason Estabrook is a graduate of Arcata High School, the blog reported.
