Dump Truck Flips on Bull Run Road Bridge near Sandy

The historic Bull Run Road Bridge, located four and a half miles north of Sandy, is temporarily closed after a dump truck flipped over on the bridge Thursday morning.

The closure is needed to remove the truck. County staff also need to inspect the bridge for damage and make any needed repairs.

The bridge will be closed to all traffic, including emergency vehicles. Local residents will need to use an alternate route.

Update (5:27 p.m.): The county reports that the crash scene has been cleaned up, and the bridge is now fully reopened.

The Bull Run Road Bridge incorporates both wrought iron and steel structural members and is one of the oldest metal truss bridges in Oregon.

The use of wrought iron in bridgework predates 1900, and Bull Run is one of only two bridges of its type in Oregon’s highway system. The other is the Sandy River Bridge on Lusted Road, which also incorporates a span from the original Burnside Bridge.

The Bull Run bridge contains a 240-foot Pennsylvania-Petit truss that was originally part of the Burnside Bridge in Portland, Oregon, built circa 1894 by the Bullen Bridge Company.

The bridge was relocated in 1926, when the current Burnside Bridge was built.
