It was the moment many of our local student athletes have been working toward all season: the chance to go toe-to-toe against some of the top competition in the state, as the Three Rivers League district championships for swimming and wrestling were held this weekend.
Of course, our Cougars made us proud, and many will be moving on to the next level.
In wrestling, the big story was senior K’den McMullin, who took home the regional title after defeating No. 1 ranked Cole Brink by fall in the 138 pound weight class. Senior Logan Doman, wrestling at 182, also made it to the finals, but he lost by decision to West Linn’s Cade Miller.
Both will move on to the OSAA State Championships on Feb. 28 and 29 at the Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Portland. Also qualifying were Ethan Ensrud, Nick Marquez, Asher Chaffee, Dominic Netter, Kaden Boyd and Brent Patterson, who all placed third in their weight classes to punch their tickets to state.
As a team, Canby finished second behind tournament champion West Linn.
In swimming, the Canby girls swim team has been impressing all season. They did not win a single meet all last year, while this season, they took four of seven.
That success continued on Saturday, as the Cougars qualified for state in both the 200 medley relay (while setting a new school record in the process) and the 400 freestyle relay. Senior Mairen Chard and freshman Avery Keinonen also qualified as individuals in the 100 butterfly.
The Canby Stunt and Sideline Team also qualified for and competed in the 2020 OSAA State Cheerleading Championships at the Veterans Coliseum this Saturday. And though the results didn’t turn out the way we would have wanted, we’re so proud of the hard work these athletes have put in all season. Thank you for representing our community at the state level!
