The Canby Police Department’s second annual Grill & Chill event was an unqualified success Tuesday night, as hundreds of area residents and families visited CPD headquarters for an evening of food and fun.
The free event included hot dogs grilled up by master chefs Captain Jose Gonzalez and Officer Steve Christman along with live music by the Canby Music team. Other officers demonstrated police vehicles, equipment and techniques, including a K-9 officer demonstration, Tasers and drones.
Free Kona ice and ice cream were offered for dessert, though temperatures were mercifully 10 or so degrees below their excessive highs the previous week. Other activities included games, a photo booth and a “Dunk-A-Cop” dunk tank that proved overwhelmingly popular for unknown reasons.
The event was Canby Police’s “way of saying ‘thank you’ to this great and supportive community,” according to CPD Chief Jorge Tro.
It coincided with National Night Out, an annual observance on the first Tuesday in August created to foster quality relationships between police and those they serve in an effort to strengthen relationships and the community overall.
