In an exclusive interview, an 18-year-old from Los Angeles is publicly sharing his side of the story after he says a late-night car crash left him not only injured but unexpectedly facing suspicion from authorities.
The teen, who asked to be identified only as Daniel, described the terrifying moments of the collision and the confusion that followed. “One second I was driving home, the next second everything went black,” he said. “When I woke up, I was in pain—and suddenly people were treating me like I was the one who did something wrong.”
From Chaos to Confusion
According to Daniel, the crash occurred just after midnight on a busy stretch of road where his car reportedly collided with another vehicle. He insists he had the right of way and was traveling at a safe speed when the collision unfolded. Eyewitnesses told him afterward that it appeared the other driver attempted to turn across traffic.
However, Daniel says that when police arrived at the scene, the questions directed at him quickly shifted in tone. “At first, I thought they were making sure I was okay. But then they started testing me, asking me things like if I had been drinking or using my phone. I felt like I went from being the victim of a crash to being accused—just like that.”
Feeling Criminalized
The teen maintains that he was disoriented after the crash and struggled to answer questions clearly while paramedics checked his injuries. In his view, this led officers to suspect impairment. “I was rattled, I couldn’t even piece my thoughts together. But instead of seeing me as someone who had just been hit, I felt like they were treating me as a criminal.”
Daniel says he was asked to undergo several roadside tests before being transported to the hospital. While standard procedure in serious accidents, he describes the experience as “humiliating and unfair.”
A Struggle for Fairness
Family members have rallied around him, saying the ordeal has left lasting emotional trauma. “We just want people to remember that not every young driver at the scene of an accident deserves automatic suspicion,” his mother said. “He’s barely an adult, and instead of support, he felt attacked.”
For Daniel, speaking out is about shedding light on what he views as a larger issue: the way teenagers and young drivers are sometimes perceived by authorities. “I get it—safety matters. But there has to be room for compassion, too. You can’t assume the worst just because of someone’s age.”
Ongoing Questions
The investigation into the crash remains open. While police have not confirmed whether charges will be filed, Daniel insists his record is clean, and he hopes the full truth comes out. “I’ve never touched alcohol, I wasn’t distracted. I was just a kid driving home. What hurts is how quickly people judged me.”
Looking Ahead
As he recovers physically and emotionally, Daniel says he wants his story to be a cautionary tale not just about road safety, but also about fairness in the aftermath of accidents. “I want people to know that when something like this happens, the ones hurt in the crash don’t just need medical care—they need to be treated with humanity. Right now, I feel like I was treated as guilty until proven innocent.”
For now, Daniel is focusing on healing and on what comes next. But his voice carries the weight of a young man determined to turn a painful moment into a larger conversation about justice, empathy, and the challenges faced by youth on the road.
