Veteran Benefits Q&A, Repair Fair on Tap at Canby Library

The Canby Public Library is inviting the public to two free community events in the coming weeks, one aimed at serving veterans and their families, and the other centered on repairing broken items — or giving them new life.

On September 28 at 4 p.m., the library will host a session with David Soto, a volunteer with the Oregon Department of Veterans’ Affairs, who will answer questions and provide resources.

The event will cover those needing assistance with or having questions about benefits for veterans with an honorable discharge, information about how to upgrade a less-than-honorable discharge and the new Promise to Address Comprehensive Toxics Act (better known as the PACT Act).

The session will take place in the Willamette Room of the Canby Public Library, 220 NE 2nd Avenue. Seating is limited, so interested veterans and family members are advised to call 503-266-3394 to reserve a seat.

From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. October 1, the library will host a Repair Fair, a free community event that brings skilled volunteers and people with broken items together.

The environmentally friendly event will offer participants a chance to have volunteers repair their items instead of replacing them, which reduces waste, and learn new skills such as sewing and basic maintenance.

Items that are suitable for the Repair Fair include clean clothes and textiles, bicycles, small electronics, small home appliances, tools or knives that need to be sharpened and jewelry.

Some repairs may not be available at every event or may require a part volunteers don’t have. To confirm an item you want to bring can be repaired, please email sustainability@clackamas.us. For a list of unaccepted items, visit repairfair.org.

To reduce the wait time for each attendee, one broken item per person will be examined at a time.
