The Canby Cougars boys golf team got more home cooking on Monday when they hosted their second tournament at Willamette Valley Country Club — which was also the first Three Rivers League match of the year.
Jake Rodgers was far and away the star for the Cougars on the day. Rodgers, the No. 1 golfer for Canby, recovered from his uncharacteristic performance in the season opener two weeks prior with a stunning 2-under 69.
Rodgers played the front nine with eight pars and one bogey. Though he was on track for a solid round, Rodgers’ back nine moved him from a good day to a great day.
Rodgers began with two birdies in four holes, one on the par-4 hole 10, and another on the par-3 hole 13. Rodgers tallied another birdie and no bogeys the remainder of the round to finish with a 69.
Tanner VanMeter finished second for the Cougars with a 77 on the day. A quadruple-bogey on hole five was the only major blemish on an otherwise good day for the senior.
Zach Netter, Colby Beck and Michael Breitbarth rounded out the day for the Cougs. Netter earned one birdie on the day and finished with 83 strokes, while Beck and Breitbarth both scored 89 on the afternoon.
Out of the seven teams in the TRL, the Cougars placed third with a combined score of 313. Rodgers’ round was tied for the best by any player on Monday, with Tigard’s Conner Henderson also shooting a 69.
Lake Oswego and Tigard were the two teams to score lower than Canby, with the Tigers claiming the crown with their tournament-low combined score of 284. The Cougars will be back in action on April 22 with the Celtic Invitational, hosted by McNary and the McNary Golf Course. The tourney is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m.
