Two young women, including one from Oregon City, were killed in a collision with a logging truck Tuesday afternoon on Highway 30 in Clatsop County.
Oregon State Police said a tan Kia Rio sedan, driven by Claudia Elizabeth Bell, 22, of Oregon City, was westbound on Highway 30 in northwest Oregon between Clatskanie and Astoria when she lost control of the vehicle while navigating a curve in inclement weather.
Police say the vehicle slid sideways and entered the eastbound lanes, where it was struck by a red Kenworth log truck driven by Dominic Enzo Rizzo, 22, of Astoria, at about 1:17 p.m. The collision occurred about six miles east of the small unincorporated community of Knappa.
Sadly, Bell and her passenger, 19-year-old Monelle Jun Lumapas, of Portland, were pronounced dead at the scene.
Rizzo was transported by ambulance out of an abundance of caution but was later determined to be uninjured. According to law enforcement officials, Rizzo fully cooperated with the investigation.
Incident responders also identified a diesel leak and called U.S. Ecology to contain and remove the hazardous waste from the scene.
The Knappa Fire District, the Astoria Fire Department and ODOT assisted the Oregon State Police. Police say the investigation is ongoing, and further details are will be released.
