More Juveniles Arrested for Fight outside Canby High School During Football Game

Four more arrests were made last week as Canby police continued their investigation into a physical altercation between at least six teenage boys and one Baker Prairie seventh-grader outside Canby High School during a football game on Oct. 25.

The victim suffered multiple contusions and a concussion and was transported to the Providence Willamette Falls Medical Center for evaluation and treatment. His mother said he had difficulty remembering his address and phone number, and later experienced fainting and vomiting.

Two minors were taken into custody that night. Canby Police Chief Bret Smith said the additional arrests were made in the days that followed as detectives conducted interviews with witnesses, parents, district staff and those involved.

That brings the total to six juveniles arrested so far, and there could be more to come. Chief Smith says that the victim himself could face charges for his role in an earlier incident, which apparently helped instigate the retaliation that happened the night of the football game.

Whether or not he or any others are charged will ultimately be up to the Clackamas County district attorney and Clackamas County Juvenile Department.

The silver lining — if there is one — is that this appears to have been an isolated incident.

Chief Smith said his investigators have found “no evidence” that weapons were involved in the fight or that any larger threats had been made against the school. He also praised the cooperation that has come from both the school district as well as the families of those involved.

Chief Smith says his department is taking the matter very seriously, and will conduct a thorough and complete investigation.
