After no official meet over spring break, the Canby track and field team faced off against Lakeridge this past Tuesday. And, while the team fell short in overall score, the Cougars had several impressive individual performances.
Over the break, the Cougars hosted the All Comers Meet, an unofficial exhibition open to all ages and skill levels. No stats were recorded at the meet, so Tuesday served as a return to recorded competition.
In the 100-meter boys’ race, Omar Villenueva narrowly beat out Lakeridge’s Riley Yaker by .01 seconds, setting a PR with an 11.48 seconds. Cohen Hall was behind the two runners with an 11.51. Villanueva beat out Yaker again in the 200, winning with a 23.38.
Easton Anderson continued the Cougars’ winning ways with a 55.35 in the 400 meter, while Tommy O’Neil ran away with a victory in the 800. O’Neil also was victorious in the 1500m, winning by eight seconds.
The hurdles was where Lakeridge made up their difference. Canby doesn’t race many for hurdles, with only two competing in the 300 meter. Jackson Doman was the high finisher for the Cougars, placing fourth.
After both teams DQ’d in the 4×100 relay, the Cougars placed second in the 4×400.
In the boys field events, Colin Kennedy won the shot put with a throw of 39 feet, while Lakeridge won both discus and javelin. Koby Kessler and Maxwell Taggert were victorious in their respective events in the high jump and pole vault, while Drew Pierson and Trey Wakefield won the long jump and triple jump.
For the girls’ events, Samantha Astorga impressed with a victory in the 100-meter dash and a close second place in the 200. Kenzie Bigej won the 400 for Canby with a time of 1:03.51, and also won the 800 by a narrow one second advantage.
Lakeridge dominated the longer-distanced events, sweeping the positions in both the 1,500 and 3,000 meter. While the Pacers won the 100-meter hurdles, Ainsley Peterson took the 300 to give Canby their first hurdles win of the year.
The Cougs lost the 4×400 belay, but the team of Astorga, Bigej, Ava Schreffler and Ashley Peterson clinched the 4×100 with a time of 54.54 seconds.
RayAnne Schedler kicked off the field events with a trio of good performances, starting with a win in shot put. Schedler wasn’t able to triumph in the discus, but did place second with a 69-foot throw. She finished the day with a victory in javelin.
Kali Kessler continued the Kessler dominance with a victory of her own in the high jump, the final win of the day for the Cougars. Lakeridge concluded with wins in the long jump, triple jump, and pole vault to take home the narrow victory.
In the boys’ events, Lakeridge defeated the Cougars 79-61. Canby fell to the Pacers in the girls’ events, losing 89.5-54.5.
The Cougars will be back in action on Wednesday as they host both West Linn and Gresham for senior day. The first event is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m.
