In a scene that would have been more reminiscent of Oregon City in 1920 than 100 years later, a small herd of cattle took up residence on a vacant corner in downtown Oregon City this week.
But hey — this is 2020. Anything can happen.
Deputies with the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office encountered the herd of approximately 15 cows while patrolling rural areas evacuated due to the Clackamas wildfires.
The owners of the livestock had to evacuate southern Clackamas County due to the wildfires, police said.
They were steered westward and temporarily corralled at the former Blue Heron Paper Mill in downtown Oregon City on Monday, where the owners have been caring for them.
The cows proved such a popular attraction for passers-by that the owner had to put a sign up at the animals’ temporary home: “Please don’t feed the cattle.”
