City Eyes Land Purchase in Industrial Park for New Permanent Home of CAT

Animal rights advocates, rejoice. At least one stray CAT in town will soon have a permanent home.

Canby Area Transit, commonly known as CAT, currently leases temporary office space in a building next to the Wilco store on Hazel Dell Way. The city last week agreed to purchase a one-acre parcel next to CAT’s existing bus yard, which is also located on Hazel Dell.

The city agreed to buy the land from Pioneer Property, an Oregon LLC domiciled in Kemah, Texas, for $380,000.

The purchase aligns with the city’s long-term planning for transit services, allowing it to eventually construct a permanent home for CAT in close proximity to the existing bus yard. It also locks in the cost of land during a time of escalating real estate values.

The city agreed to the purchase at last week’s council meeting on first reading. Final approval requires a second reading and vote, which should happen at the July 17 meeting.

Pursuant to the contract, the deal is expected to close no later than Aug. 31.
