A Portland man repping a “Not Drunk; Avoiding Potholes” sticker on the bumper of his red Volkswagen Jetta was indeed very drunk when the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office pulled him over on Highway 26 near Sandy Saturday night.
Jeffery Dewayne Cannon, 41, originally came onto police radar (though not literally) when he passed a Clackamas County patrol car parked on the side of the road “clearly speeding,” doing an estimated 80 to 90 mph.
Deputies had their first clue that there might be more than potholes to blame for Cannon’s erratic driving when he ignored the order to turn off his car — instead rolling back an estimated 25 feet until he hit the front of the police cruiser.
Asked why had allowed the Jetta to roll back into the patrol car, Cannon reportedly looked back, confused and said, “I didn’t know that happened.”
The deputy reported smelling alcohol coming from inside the car and stated there was an open can of Busch Light in the suspect’s cupholder.
The deputy asked if the suspect had any weapons, and Cannon allegedly admitted to possessing a concealed, loaded Glock handgun. The deputy took possession of the weapon and later determined it did not have a serial number, according to the sheriff’s office.
A subsequent search of the suspect’s car revealed the half-full can of Busch Light, along with a number of other empty beer cans filling the backseat and a baggie in the center console containing cocaine, according to investigators.
Cannon reportedly explained to the deputy that he had “planned to party with a friend this weekend.”
The suspect rated himself a “4” on a scale of 1-10 in terms of intoxication. However, when asked how he thought he did on a field sobriety test, he reportedly admitted, “Not good.”
A subsequent Breathalyzer test returned a .22% blood-alcohol content — nearly four times the legal limit.
Cannon is a convicted felon with a suspended driver’s license, according to deputies. He was arrested on charges of felon in possession of a firearm, driving under the influence of intoxicants and possession of a controlled substance-cocaine.
Cannon was booked into the Clackamas County Jail with bail set at $15,000.
