‘Diego’s a Very Special Player’; Cougs Led by Junior’s Heroics in Overtime Thriller vs. McNary

The Canby boys basketball team saw their five-game winning streak snapped Friday night at home vs. visiting McNary, but they didn’t go quietly. The Cougs lost the thrilling squeaker in overtime, 66-60, in a game highlighted by two outstanding juniors, McNary’s Nate Meithof and Canby’s Diego Arredondo, who scored half of his team’s points all by himself.

Diego’s heroics to force OT were the talk of the town, with an unbelievable circus shot at least four feet behind the three point line. How Diego managed to get the shot off, let alone sink it, while surrounded by taller McNary defenders, is a mystery that scientists are still trying to solve.

The athleticism of McNary’s rangy 6’3″ star Nate Meithof proved to be too much for the Cougs in overtime, with his performance being punctuated by an exclamation point of his own, an epic throw-down that drew some appreciative cheers even from the Canby faithful.

“Diego’s a very special player,” boys basketball head coach Craig Evans said afterward. “He’s very good at making those shots. We actually were in practice the next day and ran a scenario where it was tied, and he hit another one. Almost the exact same shot. That’s just Diego’s game.”
