Canby Again Named One of the Safest Cities in Oregon

Canby, which has long held domain at or near the top of various lists of the safest cities in Oregon, placed fourth in the most recent ranking by The Home Security Advisor.

The online resource for home security and safety information ranked cities based on their numbers of violent crimes and property crimes, compared to their population. In this list, Canby was fourth, with 28 reported violent crimes and 226 property crimes last year. We were behind only the smaller city of Monmouth (13 and 133), the comparably sized city of Sherwood (16 and 228) and the much larger Lake Oswego (15 and 452).

“This is where we’ve been appearing in almost every poll, from all different types of agencies who crunch these numbers,” City Administrator Rick Robinson said. “We’re always in the top 10, which I think is a very strong reflection on both the council’s commitment to public safety and our law enforcement officers’ commitment to doing the jobs that keep us all safe.”

The Home Security Advisor didn’t explain the exact methodology used for this study, but in general, violent crimes are weighted more heavily than property crimes, which may have dropped Canby a spot or two. Rounding out the top 10 were St. Helens, Forest Grove, Cornelius, Beaverton, Dallas and La Grande.

Only cities with populations of 10,000 or more were included.
