There were no new cases of the novel coronavirus confirmed in Canby the week of May 11 through the 17th, according to the latest weekly report from the Oregon Health Authority. Canby’s count held steady at 29.
Other total counts also remained unchanged for surrounding communities, including Oregon City (23) and Wilsonville (16). Molalla’s rose slightly, to 32.
The count in nearby Woodburn, on the other hand, rose by nearly 20, and remains the highest in the state, at 193. Its rate of infection, 67 per 10,000 residents, is more than five times that of Canby’s.
The slow rate of new cases closer to home is good news as the area prepares for a long-awaited reopening in the wake of the Covid-19 shutdowns. The Clackamas County Board of Commissioners voted to approve its reopening plan Tuesday morning, with minor revisions, and staff said they would submit it to the state for review before the end of the day.
Residents can keep track of the county’s progress meeting Governor Kate Brown’s seven prerequisites for reopening in a new dashboard on the county’s website.
Canby’s number of confirmed cases has risen by five since OHA began sharing results by area code two weeks ago. Covid-19 has contributed to at least two deaths in Canby — both residents at Country Side Living, the site of the city’s first and, thus far, only outbreak at a long-term care facility.
The total of deaths are being reported only by county, not city or ZIP code. As of Tuesday, Clackamas has been linked to nine of the state’s 140 deaths.
