$9,660,097. That’s how much the city’s public transportation program, Canby Area Transit, or CAT, has been awarded in grant funding over the past decade.

This success is credited to CAT Director Julie Wehling, who was recently named Outstanding Public Transportation Manager of the Year by the Oregon Transit Association. The Canby City Council recognized Julie for her award and her many other achievements at their regular meeting last week.

Mayor Brian Hodson summed it up by calling her an “amazing transit director.”

Councilor Greg Parker took the opportunity to highlight the important role that CAT plays in our community, particularly for working families.

Reached after the meeting, Julie said it “has been a pleasure” to serve.

“It has been rewarding to do a job that helps people get to the places they need to go,” she said. “I have loved working in Public Transit because I can see the good it does for my neighbors and the community.”

Of course, nothing good lasts forever. Julie has also announced her retirement, effective April 3, 2020. She and her husband have bought a place in Newport and they hope to retire there, full-time.

She said she’s looking forward to walks on the beach with their children, grandchildren and even great-grandchildren.
