Led by first-year head coach Trey Bellmore, the Canby Cougar lacrosse season got underway this past week, as they split games against the Sunset Apollos and Mountainside Mavericks.

On the road for their first game against Sunset (1-0), the Cougars were unable to give Bellmore a win in his first game as head coach, falling to the Apollos 4-14.

Despite the final score, Bellmore was impressed with the team’s defense overall. In a game that Sunset dominated from the start, transition goals reigned supreme. Canby turnovers led to breakaway Apollo chances that put Cougar goalie Logan Corley in a tough position. Still, Bellmore credited Corley’s resilience in keeping the game within reach through most of the action.

After the disappointing loss to open the season Wednesday, the Cougars who took the field to face Mountainside two days later looked like a completely different ballclub. Canby scored seven goals in the second quarter alone en route to a massive 22-9 win over Mountainside (0-2).

This time around, the offense played cleaner, the sets ran smoother, and the Cougars scored 12 points in the first half and 10 in the second, earning Bellmore his first win with the program.

“We came out with a ton of energy and jumped on them early,” the first-year coach told the Current. “We had a ton of different goal scorers and played hard for all four quarters of the game.”

With the win, the Cougars will get a week off for spring break before returning to action on Thursday, March 31, in a road match against Aloha. The game is scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m.
