After their first league dual at the end of March, the Canby track and field team returned for a three-team meet at home Wednesday. Several Cougs shone while taking on Gresham and West Linn in their senior day meet.
In the 100-meter boys’ race, Canby’s Cohen Hall and Omar Villanueva swept the top two positions, with Hall setting a PR with a time of 11.3 seconds. Villanueva bested Gresham’s Noah Letter in the 200, winning with a time of 23.33.
While West Linn ran away with most of the other track events, winning four of the remaining six, Tommy O’Neil performed well for the Cougs, claiming both the 800 and 3,000 meters, winning both by more than 10 seconds.
In the boys’ field events, Colin Kennedy was the best performer for the Cougars. In a top five dotted with Gophers and Lions, Kennedy placed third in discus and fifth in shot put. Meanwhile, Koby Kessler continued his dominant ways in the pole vault, winning with a mark of 11 feet. Kessler also placed second in the high jump and long jump.
Drew Pierson and Treyson Wakefield finished out the events for the Cougars. Pierson narrowly beat out Kessler to win the long jump, while Wakefield placed second in the triple jump to conclude the boys’ events.
West Linn took a stranglehold in the girls’ track and field events, with the Lions winning 12 of the 16 events. Kenzie Bigej and Ashley Peterson were the two winners for the Cougs; Bigej claimed both the 400 and 3,000, while Peterson was victorious in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 51.93 seconds.
Kali Kessler finally met her match in the high jump, placing second for the first time this year with a mark of 4-8, two inches shy of West Linn’s Anika Sukumar. Kessler was the only Canby athlete to place second in any of the girls’ events.
RayAnne Schedler and Autumn Solomon placed third in their respective events. Schedler, who dominated the throwing events against Lakeridge, finished third in the shot put, while Solomon set a new PR with a time of 3:20.90 in her 800-meter run.
The Cougars will be back in action on Wednesday as they take on Tualatin. The first event at Tualatin is scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m.
