It’s no secret that the weather has been, well, very on-brand for Oregon throughout this month — and it has wreaked havoc on the spring sports season. Both the boys’ and girls’ tennis teams have battled the rain almost as much as any of their scheduled opponents this year.
With boys’ tennis rained out for the week, the Cougar girls played two games against Tigard — including a rescheduled Saturday game that took place on the same day as prom — losing both by large margins.
Don’t let the stats fool you, though. The Canby girls may not have gotten a win, but they did fight until the end, with five of the Cougar sets being decided by less than two games.
The No. 3 tennis players in Canby’s Isa Arredondo and Tigard’s Summer Schroeder played in the match of the day. After Schroeder took the first set, 6-3, Arredondo battled back to win the next one 6-3. The third set would be a gauntlet — one that would drag on long after every other varsity set had finished up.
After a one-and-a-half-hour marathon of a set, Schroeder came out on top. The score? An astounding 12-10, the longest of the season.
The other close matches of the day were from the teams of Kathryn Frentress and Mallory Scott and Kendell Thomas and Avery Poe. Frentress and Scott lost two close sets, falling 7-5, 6-4. Thomas and Poe fell 6-4, 6-4. Overall, the Cougars lost all sets, 8-0.
A few days later, Canby was back again against Tigard, this time with perfect weather but fewer athletes than before. The rescheduling had the unintended consequence of half of the Cougar squad dropping out due to prom preparations.
On the other side of the racket, this gave many girls an opportunity to play in their first varsity game.
Aubri Wohlers, Deana Mendoza, and Gracie Chaffee all played in some of their first games at the next level. Mendoza fared the best of the three, winning three total sets in the 6-1, 6-2 loss.
Rosalyn Lopez-Salazar was promoted by coach Dave Brown from JV to varsity on the day. Her first-ever varsity match would be a tall order against Sydney Board, one of the top-ranked players in the state. Rosalyn lost 6-0, 6-0, but fared extremely well in a tough situation.
Doubles-wise, Arredondo and Elsie Roldolph fell in the No. 1 match, losing 6-4, 6-1. The duo of Frentress and Scott picked up the only win of the day, 6-1, 6-2.
With many games being made up from weather events, the Cougars will have three meets scheduled this week. The girls face St. Mary’s on Tuesday at 4 p.m. Hopefully, the boys will be back with them against both Tualatin and Lakeridge.
