Canby volleyball had their hands full this week as they faced the Tigard Tigers and Tualatin Timberwolves, dropping both games despite putting up a fierce fight.

Canby (4-11, 2-8 Three Rivers League) was inches away from victory Tuesday against the Tigard Tigers. After taking the first set 25-18, the Cougars swept the floor with the Tigers in the second, winning the set 25-9 and taking a commanding lead.

After those first two sets, though, the winds quickly shifted. The Cougars fought back in the third set thanks to several Chloe Annas kills to tie the game at 24. From there, the Tigers rallied furiously to win the set, 26-24.

This devastating defeat carried over as the Tigers would win the next two sets in convincing fashion. After taking the fourth set, Tigard jumped out to a 7-3 lead in the fifth and completed their miraculous comeback, winning the game 3-2.

On Thursday against Tualatin, the Cougars were unable to counter a strong Timberwolf attack, as Tualatin would take the first two sets, 25-17 and 25-21. The third set was a close back-and-forth contest.

The Timberwolves seemed to take control of the game with a phenomenal save late, but Atalie Leder responded with a great kill to knot the game at 20.

Ultimately, the Cougars were not able to finish the job as Tualatin eked out a close 26-24 set to ice the match, 3-0. After appearing to have turned a corner, Canby is now in the midst of a brutal, five-game slide — and has won only three total sets in the last two weeks of Three Rivers League play.

The Cougars hope to change the tides next week, but that will be no small feat against the No. 2-ranked West Linn Lions Tuesday. After that, they’ll head to Portland to take on St. Mary’s.
