The Canby girls soccer team (1-9-3, 1-4-1 Three Rivers League) was unable to pick up their second win of the season last week, falling 0-3 to the Oregon City Pioneers on Monday. While they were not able to record a goal all week, the Cougar girls did play the Tigard Tigers to a gritty 0-0 tie Wednesday.
Monday’s game saw a well-fought first half. While the Pioneers were able to get a goal, the Cougar back line stopped several other chances. After the first half, though, Oregon City was able to break through.
The Pioneers scored two goals in the second half to take home a 3-0 lead. Much of the second half was spent with the Pioneers on attack.
Despite Wednesday’s scoreless tie against Tigard, the Cougars played well in a game that wasn’t without its highlights. In the eighth minute, the Cougar defense halted a Tigard transition opportunity.
With 17 minutes left, a Tigard cross just sailed high above the Canby goalie. The Cougars had a chance with six minutes left, but the Tigard back line stopped the opportunity before it could fester for long.
The Cougar girls may have continued their season-long offensive struggles, but their defense has found its way as a true force. The tie against Tigard demonstrated how far the Canby defense has come since the start of the year.
With only one game left on the season, the Canby girls will finish far outside the playoff picture this year. However, they have a chance to finish out the season strong with a home matchup against West Linn on Monday. The game is scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
