In nearly every meet, the Canby Cougar boys and girls swim together, competing in the same events against the same teams. The two are nearly indistinguishable, so much so that they are usually written in the same recap article.
But against the all-girls St. Mary’s Blues, the ladies had the spotlight — and the pool — all to themselves in their Three Rivers League dual meet win.
Allison Yancey, Amanda Yancey, Avery Keinonen and Kali Mull began the competition by placing first in the 200-yard medley relay, while Faith Mason, Amy Smith, Mikayla Knowles and Ashley Peterson placed third in the event.
Mull placed first and Kathryn Taggert placed third in both the 200 freestyle and the 500 free, while Ali Parsons finished fourth in the 200 free.
Along with Mull and 200 individual winner Keinonen, the Yancey sisters were the other event winners. Amanda Yancey took both the 100 backstroke and 50 free, while Allison Yancey won both the 100 free and 100 breaststroke.
Rounding out the individual competitors, Mikayla Knowles finished in third in the 100 backstroke, Amy Smith was fourth in the 200 IM and the 100 back, and Karina Sawatsky finished fourth in the 100 fly.
As the meet shifted back to relays, the 200 free relay saw the girls finish second and third. The team of Sawatsky, Parsons, Taggart and Peterson placed second while Knowles, Mason, Smith and Elizabeth Johnson took third.
In the final relay of the day, the team of Allison Yancey, Amanda Yancey, Keinonen and Mull finished first, securing the win for Canby. The Cougar girls won the event, 94-76.
The Cougar girls — this time with the boys in tow — have two meets next week: one at Lake Oswego on Tuesday before hosting Oregon City on Thursday.
