While families contemplate Thanksgiving plans amid a worrying rise in new coronavirus cases and strict statewide guidelines ordered by Oregon Governor Kate Brown, two popular annual events in Canby have been curtailed this year, due to the pandemic.
The Canby Adult Center had to nix its plans for Thanksgiving lunch, director Kathy Robinson confirmed to The Canby Current.
“Our Thanksgiving lunch is an annual fan favorite – easily our biggest lunch event of the year,” Robinson said.
Instead, the nonprofit outreach serving local seniors will host a drive-thru event this week. The adult center collected registrations in advance for menu planning (sign-ups are now closed) and expects to serve roughly 180 people.
The center’s Meals on Wheels clients will receive the same meal delivered to their home the next day. Interested clients were also required to register in advance for that.
“We will be doing something similar Christmas week, but will specifically limit it to people age 60 and above who do NOT currently receive home-delivered meals from us,” Robinson explained.
Canby’s largest community Thanksgiving dinner, hosted by Bridging Cultures Canby, was outright canceled this year due to the pandemic, Coordinator Janet Diaz told the Current.
Last year’s dinner served almost 500 people, not counting another 100 volunteers who made it possible.
