It was an emotional night Thursday as the Canby Cougar women’s soccer team hosted Lake Oswego for a match that was all about their junior captain.
Ellie Shorter was recently diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma and has vowed to fight. Fortunately, she’s bringing an army with her. They call themselves “Ellie’s Army,” and they came in force Thursday night to show their support for Ellie on the long road ahead.
There was a lot of purple on display, as hundreds wore shirts and sweatshirts displaying the words “Ellie’s Army,” “We Fight Together” and “#elliestrong.”

On the field, Canby battled hard but ultimately fell to Lake Oswego, 5-3, with goals scored by sophomores Joey Baguio, Mallory Scott and Makena Spear.

The following morning kept the #elliestrong party going, as an estimated 180 future Canby Cougars attended a soccer clinic at Canby High School that was held in honor of Ellie and was also a fundraiser for the Shorter family.
