Clackamas Man Dies in Shipwreck off the Coast of Newport

The body of a Clackamas County man was found Tuesday morning, floating in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Newport.

The body was found by United States Coast Guard personnel stationed at Yaquina Bay and later identified as 58-year-old Hoang Ming Tran, of Clackamas.

Oregon State Police say Tran’s family had reported him overdue from a sailing trip Saturday. His ship, the Kiwanda, was later confirmed to have sunk based on debris the Coast Guard found in the vicinity of Whale Cove near Depoe Bay.

A total of eight coordinated searches were attempted before the efforts were ultimately called off on Monday. They included an MH-65 Dolphin aircrew from Air Facility Newport, a 47-foot Motor Lifeboat crew from Coast Guard Station Depoe Bay and a team from Lincoln County Rescue.

The Kiwanda was last seen by a bar tower watchstander at Coast Guard Station Yaquina Bay at approximately 7 p.m. Saturday in the vicinity of Cape Foulweather, with a northerly heading.

Investigators say Tran was found wearing a floatation device.
