Clackamas County Man Charged with Sexually Abusing Young Girls; Police Searching for More Victims

A 63-year-old man has been charged with sexually abusing three young girls — and the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office is seeking possible additional victims.

Michael Wayne Champagne was first arrested in September and charged with rape, unlawful sexual penetration and two counts of first-degree sodomy — all class A felonies — as well as two counts of first-degree sex abuse. One additional charge of sex abuse was filed against Champagne last month.

All of the charges against him are Measure 11 offenses carrying mandatory minimum sentences if convicted. Champagne has a lengthy criminal record dating back to 1991, involving misdemeanor and felony charges in Marion, Lincoln, Polk and Clatsop counties.

Champagne is currently in custody at the Clackamas County Jail, his bail set at $750,000. His trial by jury in the first case is currently set to begin on April 14 in Clackamas County Circuit Court.

Authorities believe there could be additional victims and are asking anyone with information on children who were associated with Champagne to contact the the Sheriff’s Office Tip Line — by phone at 503-723-4949 or by using the online email form. Please reference CCSO Case No. 19-014057.

Public records suggest Michael Wayne Champagne may have lived on South New Era Road in the Canby area in 2003 and 2004. These crimes stem from 2016, according to court documents.
