Canby residents who are here during the coronavirus pandemic may well be living through history, but we are also living in history.
Downtown Canby celebrates its 150th anniversary this year, and though the celebration will be more muted than planned thanks to Covid-19, the city still wants to mark the occasion in as many ways as they can.
I mean, hey — it’s not every day you turn 150.
The Canby Economic Development and Tourism Office, which brands itself Canby Business, rolled out a new social distancing-safe activity this week: a downtown Canby heritage scavenger hunt. Coordinator Calvin LeSueur said the promotion is in recognition of Canby’s sesquicentennial and Historic Preservation Month in May.
The hunt features the tagline, “This Place Matters.”
The scavenger hunt walks participants through many of the city’s oldest and most important historic sites, including the Canby Bank & Trust Building, Holly Street City Hall, Canby Pioneer Chapel, Cutsforth’s Market, Wait Park, the Independent Order of Oddfellows Lodge, Masonic Lodge, Triangle Park and more.
