Citizen Lauded for Aiding Apprehension of Hit-and-Run Suspect

The Canby Police Department has recognized a local resident for her assistance in apprehending the suspect in a hit and run that damaged a parked car.

Shortly after 4 p.m. April 19, Katie Wagner was driving on Northeast 13th Place with her children when she saw a silver BMW SUV driving suspiciously — apparently trying to park or turn around.

After the vehicle drove away, she noticed a damaged car parked where the SUV had been.

Wagner quickly snapped a cellphone picture of the BMW’s license plate as it left the scene, then undertook “substantial” efforts to find and notify the owner of the damaged vehicle, police said.

Canby Police Traffic Officer Allen Miller responded to the incident and used Wagner’s photo to locate the hit-and-run suspect.

Miller contacted the suspect and noted that he was “very intoxicated,” according to a release from Canby PD. The suspect was arrested and charged with driving under the influence of intoxicants and hit and run.

Miller later met Wagner and presented her with a thank you note from Chief Jorge Tro and a Canby Police challenge coin in appreciation of her efforts to keep the community safe.
