The Canby track and field team had their first official meet on Tuesday, March 15, when they traveled to take on David Douglas.

While the Cougars had hosted a practice meet the week prior, Tuesday’s meet was the first to count towards the standings. And Canby performed well, winning multiple events as they battled the Scots.

Cohen Hall was victorious in the men’s 100-meter race, setting a new personal best with a time of 11.73 seconds. Ashley Peterson finished second in the women’s 100 with a time of 13.52.

In the women’s 800 meter, the Cougars finished 1-2-3 with Ashley Peterson, Kenzie Bigej and Adriana Mendoza taking the top spots. Omar Villanueva was victorious in the men’s 200 with a time of 23.5.

Canby swept the men’s 400 meter as well, as Koby Kessler, Villanueva, and Easton Anderson nabbed the top three spots.

Tommy O’Neil won the 800 by nearly 18 seconds, finishing with time of 2:00.46. O’Neil also won the 1,500, this time by 12 seconds off fellow Cougar Maddox Oliver.

Canby finished out their track events with wins in both of the men’s relays and a victory in the women’s 1,500. Kenzie Bigej won her 1,500-meter race with a time of 5:14.10, 33 seconds better than the David Douglas competition.

Meanwhile, the teams of Hall, Villenueva, Treyson Wakefield, and Kessler, as well as the one of Oliver, Ryan Peterson, Andrew Dewar, and O’Neil, won both the 4×100 and 4×400 events, respectively.

Canby’s depth did not extend to all areas, as only one Cougar competed across the two hurdling events for both men and women. Of the 22 participants in those four events, Kali Kessler was the only Cougar. She finished fourth in the 100m hurdles.

David Douglas took control for many of the field events, winning all javelin, discuss, and shot put competitions. Kali Kessler battled by the Scots to win the high jump with a mark of 4-10, while Kate Mayfield posted a pole vault mark of 6-6.

Koby Kessler followed in his sister’s footsteps by winning a field event: in this case, the pole vault with a mark of 10-9. Treyson Wakefiled finished the day for the Cougars by winning both the long jump and triple jump.

After a successful meet — especially on the track — Canby will be back in action on Wednesday for the home All Comers Meet. The meet is scheduled to begin at noon.
