The Canby/Aurora VFW Post 6057 and Auxiliary invites you to join them on Feb. 22 for their annual Iwo Jima Flag Raising Ceremony, this year planned for the Ackerman Center gymnasium.
All military veterans and their families, in particular, are encouraged to attend. It’s the 75th anniversary of the flag raising at Iwo Jima, and the 25th anniversary of the Canby event.
The Battle of Iwo Jima was one of the bloodiest of the war effort, and a critical turning point in the eventual victory of the Allied forces.
Canby’s ceremony has traditionally been held at the Canby Adult Center, on the grounds of which there is a small memorial park honoring the courageous forces who fought on the black sands. But this year’s ceremony was relocated to the nearby Ackerman Center, presumably because of the expected high turnout.
Veteran groups and service organizations are welcome to participate in the massing of the colors to kick off the event. If interested, contact Martin Lackner at 503-849-8390 or Commander6057@gmail.com.
The ceremony itself starts at 10 a.m. Refreshments will be provided and, we’re told, there will also be a drawing for a ’68 Cadillac.
