Canby Swim Teams Continue Winning Ways at Double Dual

The Canby Cougars girls and boys swim teams continued their winning ways in a double dual at Centennial High School last week.

The Canby girls took their match against Rex Putnam 132 to 32 and defeated host Centennial 144-13 in the December 8 dual. The Canby boys also came away with a pair of victories: 92-60 over Rex Putnam and 119-18 versus Centennial.

“The Canby swimmers continue to improve,” coach Eric Laitinen said. “with more than half of the team first-year high school swimmers, it is fun to see how far they have come already.”

Swimming in their first meet with strong finishes in junior varsity, Case Brown finished fourth in the 50-yard freestyle and third in the 50-yard breaststroke.

Jemma Reed placed second in the 50 free and first in the 50 breast, Ava Doman was third in the 50 free, Elle Harms finished seventh in the 50 backstroke, and Kayla Williams finished second in the 100 free and fourth in the 50 free.

In varsity, Allison Yancey finished first in the 200-yard free and the 100-yard butterfly.

Avery Keinonen was first in the 200 individual medley and the 100 free, Kali Mull swam to first in the 50 free and the 100 back, Mikayla Knowles finished first in the 500 free and Amanda Yancey was first in the 100 breaststroke and second in the 200 IM.

Kennedy Hester finished second in the 50 free, Sadie Knowles was third in the 500 free and 100 back.

Isabella Miranda finished second in the 100 back, Mackenzie Peck was third in the 200 free, Karina Sawatsky swam to third in the 100 fly and second in the 100 breaststroke, Amy Smith finished third in the 100 fly and 2nd in the 100 free.

Canby also finished first in all three relays, with Allison, Amanda, Avery and Kennedy winning the 200-yard medley relay; Kennedy Karina, Amanda and Kali taking first in the 200 free relay; and Kennedy, Avery, Kali and Amanda claiming top prize in the 400 free relay.

For the varsity boys team, Ethan Beck won the 200 free and finished second in the 100 back, Isaac Beck was first in the 200 IM and 100 fly, and Alyk House finished second in the 50 free and first in the 100 back.

Andrew Hayhurst finished second in the 200 free and 100 fly, and Kai Laitinen was first in the 500 free and the 100 breaststroke. Thomas Flanagan earned second place in the 200 IM and the 100 breaststroke and Zack Peck finished third in the 500 free.

The boys’ relay teams also competed well. Alyk, Kai, Isaac and Jamison Chard were first in the 200 medley relay, as did the 400 free relay of Ethan Beck, Alyk House, Kai Laitinen and Isaac Beck.

In the 200 free relay, the team of Ethan Beck, Zack Peck, Jamison Chard and Andrew Hayhurst finished second in a very close race.

Canby swims next at home Thursday, December 15, against Wilsonville and La Salle.
