Canby Men’s Soccer Drops Oregon City on the Road for Second Consecutive Shutout

The Canby Cougar men’s soccer team defeated Oregon City on the road Tuesday night to continue their strong stretch of play to close the season. With the 2-0 victory, the Cougs secured their second consecutive shutout after last week’s 1-0 W over Lake O, and have now won three of their last four games.

The Cougars and Pioneers battled to a scoreless draw in the first half, and the trend continued through the first 10 minutes of the second, until senior captain Ben Martinusen found sophomore midfielder Francisco Cabello on a run through the back line. Cabello then dribbled his defender and finished far post side netting to put the Cougars up 1-0 in the 53rd minute.

Eight minutes later, on a quick throw-in, senior Jan Tello Lopez found Cabello on a similar play, and Cabello connected on a volley to power past the Oregon City keeper.

The Canby defense of Luke Tamimi, Edgar Gutierrez, Kyler Karn, Cristobal Esquivel, Nate Sansone, Ben Lyman, and Isaac DiCenzo all held strong to keep the clean sheet. Goalie Zach Heidema again proved to be crucial in net with three key saves during the game.

With the win, Canby improves to 4-5-1 in league play. The Cougars look to continue their recent run against Tigard for Senior Night at 7 p.m. inside Cougar Stadium.
