Canby High School had an impressive showing at the Oregon Association of Student Councils Fall Leadership Conference in Seaside this month, with two CHS juniors being named to statewide leadership positions for next year.
Gracelyn Chaffee won a three-way race for state president of the OSAC’s Executive Council, and Patricia Campbell was a named council representative for the Metro-East Region, which includes most of Clackamas County and Multnomah County east of the Willamette River.
The Oregon Association of Student Councils is governed by a 21-member board, 10 of whom are teachers, advisers, administrators and/or alumni who are involved in activities, and 11 of whom are students: one state president, two at-large members and eight regional and mid-level representatives.
Canby High leadership teacher and adviser J.D. Bellum says the elections are a big deal.
“It’s a pretty big honor for Canby High School to have two students on a statewide leadership committee like this,” Bellum said. “It’s something we have not had before at this school.”
A total of 16 students from CHS attended the conference on November 5-7, which included opportunities to hear from motivational speakers, interact with other schools and students, and share what’s happening at Canby.
The student leadership group also gave a presentation at CTV and provided other information to the school.
