Canby Heritage and Landmark Commission Seeks Input for Comprehensive Preservation Plan

What’s the best way to preserve the history of Canby? It’s a question that’s very important to the members of the Canby Heritage and Landmark Commission (for obvious reasons), and they want your feedback and input in answering it.

The HLC is asking all Canby community members to take a moment to share their views on historic preservation by taking an online survey, available in English and Spanish. Paper surveys are also available at the Canby Public Library, Canby Area Chamber of Commerce, Canby Adult Center and The Canby Center.

The survey results will become part of a comprehensive preservation plan for Canby, which is being prepared by the consulting firm Northwest Vernacular and funding through the State Historic Preservation Office and a grant from The Kinsman Foundation.

In addition to the survey, there will be a public meeting from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Jan. 22 at the Canby Civic Building to review the findings and collect additional comments and suggestions.

“This will be an opportunity for people to ask questions and engage in a conversation about how Canby should preserve its history,” HLC Chair Jennifer Giller said of the Jan. 22 public meeting.

Carol Palmer, a member of the HLC and lead on this project, agreed, saying the plan is intended to help guide Canby leaders as the city continues to grow.

“This plan will be an important resource for the city’s elected officials as they make decisions about how and where that growth occurs while ensuring we do not lose our small-town heritage,” Palmer said.

Questions about the survey or the project may be directed to Carol Palmer at carolpalmer24@gmail.com. The final report will be presented to the city council in May.
