Canby Girls Basketball Team Upset St. Mary’s on the Road, Have Won Three Straight in League

In basketball, the girls kicked their week off with an impressive win over No. 7th ranked St. Mary’s Academy, whom they defeated on the road, 49 to 41. They followed that with another road win over the struggling Tigard Tigers, 51-40.

The girls have now won three straight. They’re 5-3 in the Three Rivers League and climbing in the state rankings as the second half of the league schedule looms. Up this week will be 10-8 Lakeridge at home, and a grudge match against No. 6 Oregon City, on the road.

The Lady Cougs upset the Pioneers in their first showdown, 50-44, and Oregon City will no doubt be looking for some payback.

The boys had only one game this week, a rematch against Tigard at home, which they narrowly lost despite some more late-game heroics from junior point guard Diego Arredondo.

Diego, who was red-hot all night, hit the fade-away jumper to give the Cougs a 46-45 advantage with 25 seconds left to play. But the Tigers answered back with a score off an inbounds play and took the game, 47-46.

The Cougs, who have lost four in a row, will look to turn things around this week, with rematches against Lakeridge and Oregon City, both teams they have already beaten once this season.
