The Canby Area Chamber of Commerce was recently recognized for more than a century of service to the local community, being named to the Portland Business Journal‘s list of “Businesses & Organizations Over 100 Years Old in Oregon & S.W. Washington” for 2023.
Coming in at 44th on the list, Canby Area Chamber of Commerce joins organizations such as Willamette University (established 1842), Pacific University (1849) and Linfield University (1858).
Sparked by a citizen’s campaign for a greater Canby, the Canby Area Chamber of Commerce was officially founded on March 22, 1911.
During its 112-year history, the chamber has advocated for land use, saving the historic railroad depot and providing funds to help restore it, public parking, the local swimming pool, and improvements to local roadways and bridges.
New Executive Director Belinda Goody says the organization’s focus continues to be on thoughtful growth in the Canby community, with advocacy and support for local businesses at the fore.
Its motto has subtly shifted as the town has grown, from its 1927 tagline (“Not May-be But Can-be”) to the current iteration: “Small Town, Big Opportunities.”
The chamber boasts the distinction of being the largest private, non-governmental business support network of its kind in Canby, and it continues to work to fulfill its ongoing mission to serve the community, local businesses and support general commerce.
