Body Found in Flaming Car outside Canby; CCSO Investigating

Law enforcement are investigating the case of a person found dead in a flaming car in west Canby Friday afternoon.

Deputy John Wildhaber, spokesman for the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office, said emergency responders were called to the scene of a car fire near North Birch and Northwest Territorial Road, just east of the Molalla River, at approximately 1 p.m. Friday.

Canby Fire District responded to the scene.

“When Canby Fire extinguished the fire, they found a single deceased person in the driver’s seat,” Wildhaber told The Canby Current.

The victim was later identified as 65-year-old Barbara Stever, of Woodburn. Wildhaber said he could not provide further information due to the active investigation.

Asked if the incident involved a collision, Wildhaber replied, “I am unable to confirm a ‘crash’ at this time. All I can confirm is a single-vehicle car fire.”

Canby Police Chief Jorge Tro said the incident occurred just outside of city limits, in Clackamas County jurisdiction, and directed inquiries to CCSO.

Canby Fire officials also declined comment, citing the ongoing investigation.
